Abstract
SCIENTIC RELEVANCE. Vaginal infections such as bacterial vaginosis (BV) and vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) are major women's health problems affecting millions of women worldwide. Moreover, in recent years, mixed infections with more severe and prolonged course and tending to recur have become a landmark for infectious and inflammatory gynaecological conditions. In some cases, this is due to the formation of polymicrobial biofilms, which contributes to higher microbial survival and lower effectiveness of monotherapy. To improve patient adherence in mixed infections, modern approaches aim to apply combination drugs for intravaginal use to achieve a high local concentration of the drug, while minimizing systemic absorption. The use of combined preparations, such as Elgina® vaginal tablets (WERTEKS JSC, Russia) containing several active substances with a wide spectrum of action provides an optimal solution. Investigating Elgina® antimicrobial and antifungal activity may profoundly contribute to current treatment practices of vaginal infections, improving clinical outcomes and reducing recurrence risk.
AIM. Evaluation of in vitro Elgina® preparation-related antimicrobial activity against bacterial vaginosis pathogens, including biofilm type, and antifungal activity against vulvovaginal candidiasis pathogens.
MATERIALS AND METHODS. Elgina® preparation-related antimicrobial activity against anaerobic and facultative anaerobic microorganisms (Atopobium vaginae (currently Fannyhessea vaginae), Gardnerella vaginalis, Bacteroides fragilis) was assessed using dilution in agar method by quantitating the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC).
Antifungal activity against yeast-like fungi (Candida albicans, Candida glabrata) was performed analyzed by broth dilution method quantitating the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC).
RESULTS. Elgina® has demonstrated high antimicrobial activity against the biofilm-forming microorganisms Bacteroides fragilis, Gardnerella vaginalis and Atopobium vaginae (now Fannyhessea vaginae), as well as antifungal activity against Candida albicans and Candida glabrata.
CONCLUSIONS. The data obtained show that Elgina® exerts a prominent antimicrobial activity against main pathogens causing vaginal infections such as BV, including biofilm type, and VVC. Elgina® is a more effective alternative to existing drugs on the pharmaceutical market.
